2015-16 Points of Emphasis Memos – Memo #10: Last Two Minute Reports And Making The Call

Coming out of All-Star, we wanted to provide you with a summary of our Last Two Minute Reports (L2Ms) and that we will be posting “Making the Call with Joe Borgia” more frequently. Both of these initiatives are part of our ongoing transparency program.

L2Ms

L2M reports are prepared for games that are within five points at the two-minute mark in the fourth quarter and for overtime games (and on one occasion, a game that did not fit the criteria but involved a controversial event).  Including last night’s games, there have been 302 reports for the 844 games played (36%), including about 4,300 rated plays (about 14.1 per game), including:

  • 9 calls per game, of which 5.7 were deemed correct and 0.2 were deemed incorrect
  • 3 non-calls rated per game, of which 7.2 were deemed correct and 1.1 were deemed incorrect

In terms of accuracy, this corresponds to about 96% on calls (correct calls / all calls) and 91% on all events (events rated correct / all rated events).  As we’ve communicated in the past, we do not include all non-calls in these reports as there are literally hundreds. The ones included involve more obvious or noticeable plays, those deemed controversial or being talked about, and occasionally, plays that have some educational value.

2015-16 REFEREE OPERATIONS MEMO #10 – LAST TWO MINUTE REPORTS AND MAKING THE CALL

Making the Call

Starting this week, we are going to be posting “Making the Call with Joe Borgia” more frequently and distributing it cross platform: Socially (i.e. @NBAOfficial, @NBAPR, @NBA, Facebook), NBA.com/OfficialNBA.com & NBA App, NBA TV (GameTime) as well as our international assets.

The segment will spotlight plays that further improve transparency and educate fans. Like the L2Ms, Joe’s segment will candidly explain whether the plays are officiated correctly or incorrectly; but unlike the L2Ms, we will be able to provide significantly more insight into why some calls may be particularly difficult or complicated. Segments will appear Mondays when there are notable plays to discuss.

This Monday’s segment covered three plays, including one involving a rare out-of-bounds/delay of game play, one concerning legal verticality position, and one explaining defensive contact on a rip-through move. See video here.
