INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY JOE VARDON, (THE ATHLETIC) WITH CREW CHIEF KEVIN SCOTT FOLLOWING TONIGHT’S MIAMI HEAT AT DENVER NUGGETS GAME.

November 8, 2021

QUESTION: Why was Markieff Morris assessed a Flagrant Foul 2?

SCOTT: “Upon video review a Flagrant Foul penalty 2 was assessed. The contact by Morris was interpreted to be excessive and unnecessary based on the following criteria.  One, the severity of the contact.  Two, whether or not the player was making a legitimate basketball play. Three, the potential for injury resulting from the contact and four, the outcome of the contact led to an altercation.”

QUESTION: I have never heard that before, that if the first shot leads to a retaliation, that goes into consideration on the foul the first guy gets?

SCOTT: “Part of the Flagrant Foul criteria in our rule book is that the outcome of the contact led to an altercation.”

QUESTION: Why was Jimmy Butler assessed a technical?

SCOTT: “Butler was assessed a technical for the illegal contact that he committed during a dead ball because the contact was deemed to be unsportsmanlike in nature.”

QUESTION: So, he drew contact, it wasn’t just for the words?

SCOTT: “That’s correct.”
