Transcript: NBA Referee James Williams Comments to Pool Reporter following Toronto at Washington Game

Postgame – Toronto at Washington – October 20, 2018

NBA Official James Williams met with a pool reporter after the game between the Raptors and Wizards today. Here is the transcript of that interview:

Q: What did Scott Brooks say or do to receive two technical fouls and get ejected from the game?

A: “Scott Brooks got one technical foul and was ejected from the game. He was ejected for approaching the official in an aggressive manner while using foul language, vulgarity.”

Q: Why did the shot clock reset for the jump ball after the review of Otto Porter’s fourth quarter goaltend, which was reversed to a blocked shot?

A: “Because it’s a blocked shot, it’s a legal play and when the whistle blows, nobody has the ball. So when that happens, we jump the ball up center circle – any two players in the game at that time – and the shot clock is reset to a full 24 because it’s not a held ball. It’s a different reason why we have a jump ball, so it’s a full 24 [seconds]. So if the call is overturned, then it’s basically treated as an inadvertent whistle, no possession, 24 [seconds on the shot clock], ball at center court.”
