Traveling
This is an example of a traveling violation. The player who attempted a field goal was the first to touch the ball. If the ball fails to touch the backboard, basket ring or another player it is illegal for the shooter to be the first to touch the ball. The penalty is loss of ball to the opposing team at the sideline, nearest spot of the violation but no nearer the baseline than the foul line extended.
