Illegal Contact With/By Shooter on a Rip-Through Move
A defensive player may extend his arm or arms into the space between him and an offensive player with the ball, provided that no contact is made. However, once there is contact that affects the offensive player’s rhythm, speed, balance and/or quickness (even if initiated by the offensive player), a foul will be assessed on the defender. This interpretation helps ensure freedom of movement on the court by requiring defenders to maintain legal guarding positions.
If the offensive player initiates contact during a ‘rip-through’ move, as we see on this play, during his side-to-side motion, a non-shooting foul shall be assessed. If the contact is after the side-to-side movement and during an upward motion, continuation will be awarded (unless he is lunging away from the basket to make the contact, in which case a non-shooting foul will be assessed). Non-shooting foul is the correct call on this play.
